Socialist Party USA: National Committee Minutes
SPUSA National Committee Meeting
October 16, 2011 (Post-Convention)
Los Angeles, CA

Attending and seated: Stephanie Cholensky, Mimi Soltysik, Kim Ortiz, Greg Pason, Kristin Schall, Matthew Andrews, Lynn Lomibao, Larry Rockwood, Veronica Nowakowski, Steve Sears, Melanie Clarke, Larry Burks, Nick Pehlman and Peter Moody.

Agenda adopted unanimously

Election of Officers

Motion: To elect Greg Pason as National Secretary. Motion passed unanimously

Motion: To put out a call for National Treasurer with an election to be held at the first NC meeting of 2012. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion: To elect Steve Rossignol as National Archivist. Motion passed unanimously.

Kristin S. reported and other committee members confirmed Billy Wharton’s statement that he was resigning as Editor if re-elected as Co-Chair.

Motion: To appoint Kristin Schall interim Editor with the National Secretary putting out a call for a National Editor with an election to be held at the first NC meeting of 2012. Motion passed unanimously.

Editorial Board

Kristin S. reported that as interim Editor she would not be able to serve on the Editorial Board and new members should be elected. David Keil,Billy Wharton and Angela Sarli stated their interest in serving on the current Editorial Board which is now composed of James Mara (convener), Sally Joyner, Mal Herbert and Steve Rossignol.

Motion (Matt A.): To create a committee to draft Questions for Editorial Board (EB) members and develop a plan for outreach for candidates to serve on EB to be reviewed by the next NC meeting. The EB will include the the current EB plus Billy Wharton,  Davil Keil and Angela Sarli, who have stepped forward as candidates as of this date.

Substitute (Kristin S.): To appoint all current/eligible Editorial Board members to the new Editorial Board and to put out a call for Editorial Board candidates. A new Editorial Board will be elected at the first National Committee meeting of 2012.

Motion: To replace the original motion with the substitute. Passed 7 yes 3 no (Steve S., Stephanie C. and Matthew A.) and 2 abstentions (Greg P. and Peter M.) 

To pass the resolution as substituted. Motion passed 8 yes 3 no (Larry Burks, Steve S. and Matthew A.)

Other Officers
National Herald

Motion (Veronica N.): “National Herald”
1)    The National Committee hereby creates the position of “National Herald”.
2)    The job of the National Herald shall be to warn the American public; through media access, public appearances, the spending of Super PAC money etc, of the danger, if any, that the Socialist Party USA and its candidates may pose to America and the capitalist class of 1 %.
3)    This position may be compensated directly buy the Socialist Party USA, but the National Herald may accept compensation from other organizations for their work, such as Emmys, Nobel Peace Prizes and other such awards.
4)    The National Committee may choose at a later time to compensate the National Herald with an appropriate award at their discretion.

Campaign Clearinghouse
Motion (Steve S.): To name Matt Erard as the Campaign Clearinghouse Coordinator. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion (Steve S.): To strike the restriction of the Campaign Clearinghouse Coordinator to run for public office. Motion passed unanimously.

Budget
Motion (Greg P.): To interpret the convention resolution on National Secretary salary as taking effect with the 2012 budget year. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion (Kristin S.): To extend budget to publish, at current costs minus Editor and layout stipends, the next two issues of The Socialist with the understanding that the Editorial Board and National Committee will raise funds. The National Action Committee will consider funding when deciding the feasibility of a print version of issue #6. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion (Greg P.): To pass the amended budget through the rest of 2011. Motion passed 11 yes (Stephanie Cholensky, Mimi Soltysik, Greg Pason, Matthew Andrews, Lynn Lomibao, Veronica Nowakowski, Steve Sears, Melanie Clarke, Larry Burks, Nick Pehlman and Peter Moody) and 3 abstentions (Kristin S., Kim O. and Larry R.)

Endorsements
Motion (Matthew A.): To endorse the “Global Day of Action for Migrant Rights” and to encourage locals to participate. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion (Matthew A.): The SPUSA shall join other anti-capitalists and anti-imperialists May 15-22 in Chicago to protest NATO and the G8. The National Committee is directed to ensure that the SPUSA is represented in the planning process for events in Chicago, and that the SPUSA assist in hosting participants in coordination with the Chicago local. Motion passed unanimously.

Other Business
Motion (Veronica N.): The National Committee directs the co-Chairs of the Socialist Party USA to make contact with all presidential and vice-presidential candidates and thank them for their offers to run on our ticket and encourage them, if not members, to join the Party.

This task has a deadline of two weeks from this date to make initial contact. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion (Greg P.): To authorize $150 from the SNC campaign fund to purchase buttons and bump stickers for the Alexander/Mendoza campaign. Motion passed unanimously.

Motion: To hold the next National Committee meeting on January 28 – 29, 2012 in Dallas Texas. Motion passed unanimously.
